Walker carries the picture almost single-handedly as Nolan, a father awaiting the birth of his first child in New Orleans just as Hurricane Katrina is about to hit. A swift (and rather unconvincing) series of circumstances soon finds him alone in the hospital with his newborn daughter. She needs a respirator. When the power goes out, he’ll have to use all his resources to keep them both alive.
Heisserer has written several horror screenplays (the reboot of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Final Destination 5”), and he uses this experience to excellent effect. Like the main character, he has little to work with — one actor and a single setting for most of the film — which forces him to think creatively.
As for Walker, he shows (as he did in last summer’s indie “Vehicle 19”) an earnest desire to push himself in new directions — and prove his skill to those who associate him only with the “Fast & Furious” films.
The 97-minute running time for “Hours” feels strained. Walker still does best when he’s in action, rather than emotional, mode. But most of the movie elicits tense empathy, which builds to a genuinely nerve-wracking sense of dread.
