How much Hollywood hokum are you prepared to swallow? That should be the operative question heading into “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Don’t get me wrong: There’s lot to like about the film, a telling of how Walt Disney persuaded the author of “Mary Poppins,” P.L. Travers, to allow for a film adaptation of the book. It’s headlined by two outstanding performances from two of our finest actors, and it’s an intriguing look at the creative process.

However, there’s also this: “Saving Mr. Banks” is blatant Oscar bait, aimed at the aging, Old Hollywood-idealizing demographics of the Academy Awards electorate. It’s a love letter by Disney (the corporation) to itself, complete with loads of product placement of the theme parks, the movie library and even Mickey and Goofy. And it’s a white-washing of Walt Disney the man, leaving out anything negative or unsavory from his biography. Not since the Google commercial that was “The Internship” has a movie been so obvious a feature-length advertisement for a specific company.

Also, everything I’ve read indicates that the events of the film are about 180 degrees away from what actually happened. The film is a full-throated defense of Hollywood B.S. and print-the-legendism over reality, while incorporating the world’s most tired screenwriting crutch, attributing any and all motives to daddy issues. And its conclusion is that there’s only one thing that can melt the heart of a troubled, cold-hearted grouch, and that one thing is a Disney movie.

All of that is true. But I’m not ashamed to admit that, on some level, I fell for it.

Helmed by John Lee Hancock- who also directed “The Blind Side” and believe me, it shows- “Saving Mr. Banks”depicts author Travers (Emma Thompson), as a sad, bitter, hostile middle-aged woman, scarred by the childhood in which she was raised by her loving but alcoholic father (played in flashbacks by Colin Farrell.) Reluctant for years to okay a movie adaptation of her book, she’s at last persuaded by Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) to come to Hollywood and participate in the movie.

In between the childhood flashbacks, which roughly form the plot of “Mary Poppins,” we’re let into the creative collaboration behind the movie, which included screenwriter Don DaGradi (Bradley Whitford) and composers the Sherman brothers (Jason Schwatzman and BJ Novak). Can this team of Hollywood magic makers get this unhappy Brit to help them create a classic movie, and maybe make her smile in the process? What do you think?

So what rescues this film from transparent manipulation? Mostly, it’s Tom Hanks, who’s just wonderful here. It’s always risky when an iconic actor plays an iconic real-life person, but the actor manages it here, especially in a long monologue that essentially spells out the movie’s thesis statement. After years of spending most of his time either producing or starring in lackluster projects like “Larry Crowne,” it’s so great that Hanks has his leading-man authority back, in both this and “Captain Phillips.”

I haven’t seen “Mary Poppins” in a long time, and I’d imagine most people my age or younger (I’m 35) haven’t either, so I’m sure “Saving Mr. Banks” will be a tough sell to anyone not enamored with old-Hollywood glamour and Disney mythology. When I saw the film I was seated in front of four little old ladies who sussed out the plot out loud throughout, and sang along with all of the songs. That- especially the ones with Oscar votes- are this film’s primary demographic.

In all, “Saving Mr. Banks” adds up to a perfectly fine movie that will likely get considerably more Oscar nominations than it probably deserves.

Ron Burgundy and his news team were the story of the weekend with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, though their numbers are anything but a big deal. The film opened at the lowest end of its expected spectrum and I have yet to come across anyone who’s liked this film unreservedly. I was never a big fan of the original, which I got around to a few years too late. (I expect this one to hit my rental queue sometimes in 2017). It opened behind The Hobbit, for which the amount of critical goodwill hasn’t been nearly strong enough to convince me something better than the insufferable first episode is in store. Smaug smug as it may sound, I can think of quite a few better things to do with two and a ½ hours.

American Hustle expanded beyond New York and Los Angeles and all the way to snowy Montreal, where I was able to watch it. (Personal story: this is the third time in my life that I’ve went to le cinema on trips to Montreal, after the first Sherlock Holmes installment and Ted. The experiences are very slowly but surely improving. I expect to catch a real good one on my 2017 trip.) Hustle is Russell’s unruliest but least energetic offering, though it’s totally worth watching because of Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper’s perm. At $20m, it doesn’t seem positioned to beat Silver Linings Playbook’s gross, but The Fighter’s should be within reach.

OVERALL

A who’s who of David O. Russell performers from his past two films Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, (with an exception of Jeremy Renner), American Hustle is a film driven by such performers who are game for the unorthodox shenanigans he often gravitates to. In fact, the film is more about its performances than its characters, which isn’t entirely a good thing. It’s good for the ability to enjoy the experience of the movie — the giddiness of watching these actors all in the same room with equally great hairdos from a different era gives the party that is American Hustle a strong replay value. But this film is a special moment like A-list celebrity volleyball games, complete with Jennifer Lawrence aggressively cleaning her living space to Wings’ “Live and Let Die,” or an incredible batch of scenes with Bradley Cooper antagonizing a famous comedian. It’s going to make a lot of gifs, in which Cooper will be assuming a more immediate lead role.

But once one attempts to dig under the recognizable actors in these playfully unrecognizable characters, there is a comparatively less amount of richness to be found. While we can be thankful that American Hustle places these characters into unique relationships with one another, they are heavily uninteresting when taken as individuals, despite the potential that remains there (with an exception of Cooper’s underdog Richie, perhaps). Bale’s manipulative Irving Rosenfeld, though captivating in the film’s first shot as he assembles his hairpiece, doesn’t hold our attention or our emotion when he has a dark pensive moment in one of his laundromats; Lawrence’s Rosalyn is another amusing character for the endearing actress to play, is but a collection of goofy jokes about being trashy. Even Amy Adams’ Sydney, who strangely commits to a bad accent for a very comical amount of time, is cut short for her potential.

Russell shows that he is a sound filmmaker, both visually and in terms of his usage of music. As with The Fighter, he expresses that he knows how to bulk a soundtrack. In particular, he has a specific taste for music that can fulfill sequences with both nostalgia and a distinct energy, steering the drama of the sequence. American Hustle, with all of its jokes about Anchorman-like costume design, features a great scene of character procession to the climactic wails of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

As indicated by the planted existence of Lawrence’s character (one who is on the fringe of becoming an ugly example of Oscar politics), American Hustle is best at making jokes than it is a strong narrative for which the audience to get into, welcoming its audience with a plethora of ’70s-based laughs more than intriguing “Some of this actually happened” true story craziness. In terms of film history, Russell’s latest is this year’s Burn After Reading. A movie that is preceded by its ridiculousness, American Hustle is a hugely amusing film, but not one to take very seriously. also read >>

Almost a decade has passed since Ron Burgundy and the Channel Four News crew were seen swinging their supersized egos across a San Diego studio room floor. Anchorman - that wry, dry sleeper hit of yore - quietly, almost innocuously, became a cult favourite, to the extent that star Will Ferrell admitted he was often asked about little else.

Momentum for a follow-up slowly began to build.

Little surprise, then, that when the cast of this long-awaited revival arrived, en masse, for last month's Australian premiere, Antipodean people power was name-checked as a factor in getting the gang back together. (Amid a flurry of global pre-release, social-network marketing was a YouTube message specifically referencing the Melbourne Cup and Sydney Airport).

Anchorman 2 is so gleefully awash with references to Australiana that it could be a blatant love letter from its star Ferrell (who co-wrote the screenplay and is a frequent visitor to our shores). A white pointer, the legacy of Olivia Newton-John, a brash Aussie boss (played effectively by Josh Lawson) and an airline christened Koala Airlines all feature prominently.

One of the final films completed by Paul Walker before he died in a car crash last month, “Hours” marks a poignant farewell for its star — and a promising debut for director Eric Heisserer.

Walker carries the picture almost single-handedly as Nolan, a father awaiting the birth of his first child in New Orleans just as Hurricane Katrina is about to hit. A swift (and rather unconvincing) series of circumstances soon finds him alone in the hospital with his newborn daughter. She needs a respirator. When the power goes out, he’ll have to use all his resources to keep them both alive.

Heisserer has written several horror screenplays (the reboot of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Final Destination 5”), and he uses this experience to excellent effect. Like the main character, he has little to work with — one actor and a single setting for most of the film — which forces him to think creatively.

As for Walker, he shows (as he did in last summer’s indie “Vehicle 19”) an earnest desire to push himself in new directions — and prove his skill to those who associate him only with the “Fast & Furious” films.

The 97-minute running time for “Hours” feels strained. Walker still does best when he’s in action, rather than emotional, mode. But most of the movie elicits tense empathy, which builds to a genuinely nerve-wracking sense of dread. What film of his makes money??? Track it. Since Diary of a Mad Black Woman, his films have been dying at the box office one by one.

His quality of work is all the same too. He speaks to older and black women alike. His heroines in his films are unforgivingly bashed, abused, and victims of the cruelest instance. During the last ten minutes, the antagonist gets their comeuppance and the audience leaves happy and ready for Sunday morning service. For the uninformed, it's called sentimentality. It's when the author/creator takes your emotions to one end of the spectrum, then suddenly yanking you hard in the other direction. The sudden emotional change causes a heightened reaction. I challenge you to find any one of his films where sentimentality does not occur in the last ten minutes.

Tyler could care less about what all you bastards have to say. He's not competing for his films to blow out in the box office against other popular franchise films like Transformers, Captain America, The Hobbit, etc.; no, he's simply giving his fans what they want. As long as we still want Madea, he will keep doing it. She is hilarious and Tyler is an amazing guy. His films are full of inspirational messages. Nothing else has made me be able to cry so terribly and laugh my gut out. It's real life people. This stuff happens and I'm glad he is able to touch on these topics and bring realization to them and offer help all the while still being funny throughout his films. Watch Inside Llewyn Davis 2013 Full Movie

Joel & Ethan Coen are known for their off-beat and ambitious films which often mix comedy and crime, and feature colorful characters. "Raising Arizona", "Fargo", and "The Big Lebowski" certainly fall into that category. The Coens have also gotten gritty, beginning with 1984's "Blood Simple" and highlighted by 2007's Oscar-winning "No Country For Old Men" (and I called it, friendo). Their latest film doesn't fit into either of those categories or really follows anything the brothers have done in the past, which clearly, is exactly what they we going for.

"Inside Llewyn Davis" is a quiet, sincere look at a musician struggling to find purpose in his life in the midst of the 60s music scene in Greenwich Village, NY.

Oscar Isaac ("Drive") hits all the right notes as the title character. It's 1961. Llewyn, a folk singer, is still mourning the loss of his partner, who committed suicide. So now he's attempting to make it as a solo artist, but is getting no help from his crabby manager and is left to perform at the same club night after night.

His former girlfriend, Jean (Carey Mulligan) is pregnant, and she doesn't know if Llewyn or new boyfriend Jim (played by real-life music superstar Justin Timberlake) is the father. They are also a folk singing duo. Nonetheless, Jean wants an abortion.

Llewyn has no home and hardly any money. We follow him (and a cat or two) over the course of a week, as he wanders through the city and then goes on a road trip with businessman Roland Turner (John Goodman) and his driver ("TRON: Legacy"'s Garrett Hedlund) to Chicago, where he hopes to finally get his big break.

But the struggling singer can't escape his problems. He believes he's doing the right thing with the decisions he makes, but instead, often fails to think things through, which only gets him in deeper. Llewyn is not the hero of this story by any means. He is a lost soul, troubled by his past, and incapable of planning a future.

With "Inside Llewyn Davis" the Coens have created a character and a film that audiences should be able to relate to. His struggles are our struggles. Life continues to throw Llewyn curveballs, which he has difficulty handling. And still we see glimmers of hope for him as he pushes on.

Unlike the Coen Brothers' previous film, the 2010 remake "True Grit", "Inside Llewyn Davis" relies on an unconventional storyline to the finish. Llewyn is a victim of the poor decisions he's made and continues to make. And his pride often prevents him from getting the help he needs. There are life lessons here for everyone.

At times this is a moving film with a standout performance, great music and some smart dialogue, which also has important things to say. It will be very interesting to see if it inspires Awards Season voters. There are several strong scenes, but the movie is emotionally inconsistent. The quirky supporting characters are a bit flimsy, forcing Isaac to carry the film on his back. And the device of the cat doesn't work at all, resulting in more of a mainstream feel than, I'm sure, the Coens intended.

I’m not the biggest fan of foreign films. You can call me a snooty American or a simpleton who doesn’t understand the fine art of overseas cinema, but the truth is, I don’t go to the movies to read. If I wanted to do that I would stay home and read a book (If I read books). In 2003 I was pressured into seeing the South Korean film Oldboy because everyone said how phenomenal it was. Oldboy was entertaining for a foreign film, but I still found it ridiculous and too unbelievable.

Now, Spike Lee gives us an Americanized version of Oldboy staring Josh Brolin and guess what? It’s just as sick and engaging once again even if the whole plot is preposterous. For those unfamiliar with the source material, Oldboy is a twisted tale of an alcoholic, deadbeat dad named Joe (Brolin) who is imprisoned for 20 years for no apparent reason. Joe spends his solitude eating dumplings, punching walls and almost giving up on life before he is mysteriously set free. Joe sets out on a mission that seems both complicated yet convenient at the same time.

Oldboy takes some dark turns and doesn’t shy away from some hammer on skull violence. I will say that Spike Lee may have directed the worst fight scene I’ve ever seen on film. Fans of the original film will be disappointed with Lee’s inability to pull off the one man brawl scene that takes place in the updated version of Oldboy. There are some other changes to the plot in this new Oldboy, but the DNA of the original is still intact and there lies the problem.

As much as Oldboy keeps your attention with its violent and dark mystery, the bottom line is the story is pretty dumb by the time the credits roll. There’s no way that everything could have fallen into place so perfectly for both sides. Oldboy is just too over the top at times again in American cinemas. I have a feeling fans of the original Oldboy will not be as kind reviewing Spike Lee’s new version as I was. Big, bright, often beautiful and essentially an action movie, as are most animated features these days, "Frozen" comes from Walt Disney Animation Studios. While Disney credits the 1845 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale "The Snow Queen" as primary inspiration, the movie owes a lot more to the Broadway blockbuster "Wicked."

Example: In "Frozen," when its misunderstood young sorceress (voiced by Idina Menzel, who won a Tony for originating the green one in "Wicked") unleashes her magical powers and starts designing her permafrost castle in exile, she wallops a tune called "Let It Go," which is very, very, very much in the spirit of "Defying Gravity," the "Wicked" Act 1 closer. The eight songs in "Frozen," very good in the main, were written by the team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The latter — co-writer of "Avenue Q" and "The Book of Mormon" — has described "Let It Go" as the "the biggest, beltiest diva number" imaginable. It's almost a parody of itself. When it comes to such numbers I tend to respond the way Mr. Darling does in "Peter Pan": A little less noise there, please. But if you like that sort of thing, "Frozen" has that sort of thing.

And the film basically works. It's entertaining, and following an old Disney tradition "Frozen" works some old-school magic in its nonhuman characters.

There's Sven the reindeer, stalwart best friend of the hunky Nordic love interest Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), who harvests ice for a living. But especially there's Olaf the joyfully needy snowman, with a charming overbite and three or four twigs for hair. He dreams of sunny summer vacations courtesy of the fetching ditty "In Summer," in which Olaf yearns for scenarios that would spell his demise. Olaf is voiced by Josh Gad, who worked with Lopez in the original iteration of "The Book of Mormon." You can hear the smile in Gad's vocal delivery; his comic timing's very sly, a little behind the expected beat, and there's a sweetness to his delivery. What Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella did for Disney's film "The Lion King," Gad does for "Frozen."

The movie takes the bare bones of the original fairy tale and builds its own contraption. It's a tale of two sisters. Elsa, voiced by Menzel, has been blessed/cursed with the emotion-triggered ability to whip up ice and snow in threatening amounts. Anna, voiced by Kristen Bell, is nearly killed by her sister's magic as a young girl, so their parents devote what's left of their lives to protecting one girl from the other.

Years pass, as they do, and Elsa is to be crowned queen of Arendelle. At the coronation sister Anna, insta-smitten with a dreamy suitor from a neighboring kingdom, asks Elsa to bless the union. No soap, says Elsa, whose outburst turns her ice-magic into "The Day After Tomorrow." The coastal kingdom is plunged into a deep freeze. Elsa squirrels away up north, alone, to sing power ballads. DOC NYC, the Gotham documentary festival that launched in 2010, has lined up a broad slate with 11 world premieres, including the debut of Michel Gondry’s doc “Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? An Animated Conversation with Noam Chomsky.”

Film, in which Gondry interviews linguist Chomsky and illustrates his ideas with animation, will close the fourth annual festival, which launches this year with the New York City bow of Errol Morris’ Donald Rumsfeld pic “The Unknown Known.” DOC NYC lineup will encompass 72 features and 39 shorts, which fest organizers bill as the largest documentary festival in country.

Other titles screening as galas during DOC NYC include John Maloof and Charlie Siskel’s “Finding Vivian Maier,” about a little-known photographer, and “Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love,” Dori Berinstein’s look at the late songsmith of “A Chorus Line.”

Festival slate is divided into about a dozen sections including two juried, competitive categories: ”Viewfinders,” a section focused on strong directorial visions, and “Metropolis,” a collection of Gotham-centric titles. “American Perspectives,” “International Perspectives,” “Sonic Cinema,” “Art + Design” and “Midnight Docs” also are among the categories on tap.

The list of world preems set for the fest includes “White Gold,” Simon Trevor’s investigation of the ivory trade; Julian Jones’ “Inside the Mind of Leonardo 3D”; and “WEB,” Michael Kleinman’s film following Peruvian children in the One Laptop Per Child program, among others.

Also as part of the festival, Oliver Stone will present the never-before-broadcast prologue to his Showtime skein “The Untold History of the United States.” Other notable docs on the 2013 slate include James Franco-produced “Kink” and a roster of films selected by fest programmers as likely awards-season contenders, including “The Square,” “The Act of Killing ” and “20 Feet from Stardom.”

This is the one that we have all been waiting for. Hunger Game fans will be flocking to this latest edition to the trilogy. The books have been flying off the shelves like gangbusters and you can expect long lines in the movie theater for this one. In Hunger Games: Catching Fire, it seems that the Capitol City was not so impressed with the victory of the young lovers. This Parental Guide to the movies has the story so that you can decide whether or not you want to get your tickets early.

Katniss and Peeta were billed as the star struck lovers who defied the system and won for their districts. However, it seems that their victory has ignited the seeds of rebellion in the Districts of Panem. After Katniss and Peeta return home, they must soon leave again for the Victor's Tour of the districts. Along the way, Katniss begins to sense a rebellion brewing. The Capitol is still very much in control, as they prepare for the 75th edition of the Hunger Games. This one is a special edition known as the Quarter Quell and it is even tougher than the first. Both adults and children compete. This is bound to be a historical event of epic proportions.

The battle that Katniss faces this time is different from the one in the first movie. She is a black mark on the reputation and power of the Capitol City. The Capitol City must destroy her, but they know that simply killing her will only make her a martyr and could possibly cause a revolt. Their plan is to destroy her reputation among those that she loves. They will convince her district that she is no longer one of them, but that her heart belongs to the Capitol City.

Catching Fire is similar to the original in many ways. Only this one packs a bigger punch. This one is rated a PG-13 and this would seem appropriate for the content. However, this Parental Guide to the movies thinks that you should carefully consider the decision to take the younger ones along. There are several kisses, sometimes multiple kisses between the teen characters. There are several barely clothed participants in the games. Johanna Mason undresses in an elevator. Strong sexual references are implied, but not shown. The deal breaker in terms of family friendly movie reviews is that Katniss is pregnant. A few of my lucky readers and girlfriends saw the movie the other day for a lil girls night out! It was a lot of fun, we laughed, cried, laughed so more and cried again, yep we were all full of emotions. This movie hit home though, it really did. This movie is about life and the many twists and turns it takes you through and best friends. We all try to make friends from grade school to college but only the strong survive. This movie reminded me of my best friend Heather and I so much. We met in college, just like the characters in this film. Me and my bestie dated best friends(back then). We went through so many ups and downs with our relationships and just like the film, we had a tragic lost in our circle. My best friend’s boyfriend Chuck was killed in a very bad car accident.

I actually introduced them and they quickly fell in love. Chuck and I went to high school together and graduated together. They met, dated for years and had two beautiful kids together. I’m the god-mom of their kids Mylez & Morgan and they call me “TT”. In the movie, you see the same relationship between Nia Long(Jordan) & Monica Calhoun(Mia). I was balling because there is a death scene in the film too, I know this all too well. I never saw it coming when I got the phone call that Chuck had passed. It hurt so much because we were so close. It was never the same after that. I eventually broke up with my boyfriend and my friend Heather eventually got back on her feet and continued on with life. She is now a single mom and has another little girl Maylin and owns a hair salon.

I won’t tell you guys too much more about the movie because I really would like for you to see it, but do know it’s worth going to check it out. Its so well scripted, casted, directed, the storyline is funny as hell and you will leave wanting to call your friends from the past to the present. I really enjoyed this movie and wouldn’t mind flying home to watch it with my bestie. I give this film an A+ Take your girlfriends or make it a date night for sure!

Pitted against an enemy that neither Odin nor Asgard can withstand, Thor must risk everything to stop the dark elf before the universe is extinguished.

Generic plot aside, Thor: The Dark World, directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), is everything that fans of Marvel’s movie universe have come to expect and builds upon the enjoyable foundation of the first Thor film.

Thor was packed with whit, humor, charm and action, but between the mythological and fantastical was a film filled with family drama and memorable characters. The Dark World is no different.

From the large battles at the film’s onset to the climactic clash between Thor and Malekith at the film’s conclusion, The Dark World is packed with action from start to finish.

Between armor-clad warriors and dark elves whose weaponry seems out of this world, even by Asgardian standards, action in The Dark World is as enjoyable as it is fantastical.

Though the film’s many battles aren’t anything viewers familiar with science fiction haven’t seen before, they remain pleasant to watch and continue to develop the fantastical world of Thor and Marvel’s universes.

When it isn’t an action movie or suffering from some pacing and plot issues, the film has some truly phenomenal moments that exceed Thor in their emotional weight and ability to draw the viewer inward, all of which are carried to new heights and depth by the film’s exceptional cast.

After a sluggish start, a majority of the film is spent further exploring Thor and Loki, revealing aspects of the characters that viewers have never seen before.

In the past, Thor was overconfident and arrogant, nearly starting a war to put the frost giants back in their place, but this film finds the character at ends with the kingly position he has always wanted. Realizing there are limits to what a king can do, Thor’s conviction and determination drives the character as he deals with the difference between what he wants and what is expected of him.

In the presence of Jane Foster, (Natalie Portman, Illusions and Mirrors) who emotionally and romantically ties Thor to Earth, Thor becomes a much more emotionally nuanced character, furthering the range that viewers have already seen from the character in Thor and The Avengers.

Loki, however, is just as mischievous as ever, still hungry for power and waiting for his chance to sit on the thrown. But The Dark World takes the character to an unprecedented emotional low; seeing a disheveled Loki on the floor of his destroyed cell is one of the many moments in which Hiddleston truly shines, bringing a depth and nuance to the character that is exacting and captivating. Under the category “Sequels That Never Needed To Exist But Here It Is Anyway” comes The Best Man Holiday, the follow-up to The Best Man (1999). The first film didn’t change the world by any stretch of the imagination, but I did appreciate it for its entertainment value and strong chemistry among the main cast. A lot of that translated into this latest entry, with all the actors returning and Malcolm D. Lee once again taking writing and directing duties. It’s clear everyone involved had a good time, but does that make for an effective movie? There are parts where it really gets going, especially when the cast gets to play off one another. But while the first film knew what it was going for, this one juggles a number of different elements, creating an uneven tone it never fully recovers from.

A lot has happened since we last saw this group of friends. Harper (Taye Diggs) married Robyn (Sanaa Lathan), and they are now expecting a child. Lance (Morris Chestnut) has become a football legend, on the verge of breaking NFL records, with Mia (Monica Calhoun) and his kids by his side. Julian (Harold Perrineau) and Candace (Regina Hall) have their own family as well, and continue to pursue fundraising ventures despite the lack of potential donors. The snotty and high-maintenance Shelby (Melissa De Sousa) gained fame and fortune as a reality TV star. Jordan (Nia Long) continues to be the self-sufficient career woman, and Quentin (Terrence Howard) is still the skirt-chasing troublemaker he’s always been.

Let’s flash back for a moment. The main crisis of The Best Man involved Harper writing a detailed book airing out all the dirty laundry about the group, especially between himself and Lance. That created a rift between them that cut fairly deep. Those issues still linger in the present, when Lance and Mia invite everyone over for a reunion during the Christmas holidays. While your eyes may glaze over during the introduction that delves into the world of dark elves and ancient battles between pagan deities, there's good reason to stay awake for this goofy, explosive and oddly warm-hearted yarn that knits a cold story of family dysfunction with matinee spectacle. Granted, the opening scene looks more like a dreary return to the bloated digital tableaus of Peter Jackson as it sets up the big dilemma via an epic battle between elves and Asgardians, but don't let all the ginger beards and creepy fantasy face masks put you off.

There's a weapon of mass destruction called the Aether - a sickly red cloud that permeates the flesh and infuses it with special power, and whoever possesses this special poison can win any war, or conquer any world, which is why Thor's grandfather hid the weapon in a world far, far away.

Yet, for some mysterious reason, the Aether is stirring and it's wreaking havoc on Earth.

Holes in the time-space continuum are beginning to appear, which pulls us back into familiar territory when we're reintroduced to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) - the hammer-wielding hero with big muscles and a villainous little brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

Thor and his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) know they have to intercede to make sure the Aether doesn't end up in the wrong hands, but there's an evil elf standing in their way, not to mention the vengeanceobsessed Loki, Thor's perpetually jealous adopted sibling.

The rivalry between the two sons is solid Shakespearean content and thanks to Hopkins, who turns Odin into a Marvel-inspired version of King Lear, every golden thread of classical sentiment reaches the 3D frame intact.

Ironically, comic book adaptations desperately need this heavy, serious, weight of the world content to work. Without it, they simply float away on a raft of insanity and resemble psychotic hallucinations - or in this case, a page from the Ikea catalogue.

Comic book heroes need to take themselves deathly seriously, and even with that incessant sparkle in his sea blue eyes, Hemsworth is every bit as earnest as he needs to be as he reprises his hammer for a third whack at Thor.

The actor is clearly comfortable in the part at this point, and he's able to give the big galoot some charming details in this go-round. One of the sweeter moments comes when Thor is back on Earth and reunited with his true love, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) - a physicist looking into the anomalies surrounding the Aether.

He walks into an apartment, and after a moment of hesitation, hangs his beloved Mjolnir (the hammer) on a coat hook.

The moment is fleeting and completely goofy, but it does more than bring a second of humour to the mix.

It highlights the difference in scale between human beings and the gods, and how

we often get lost in the blur of pettiness instead of focusing on the big picture.

As human beings, we live short little existences that seem important to us, but are inconsequential to the gods. Gods don't understand our puny and pathetic motives, but in that one gesture, Thor suggests he's trying to respect the human scale.

After all, he's in love with a human woman, and if he can whittle his manly mettle down to size, he may be able to consummate his love for the fair lady.

Portman proves surprisingly plucky as the intrepid doctor. The Black Swan star shelves the high drama but keeps the high cheekbones as she squares off against several supernatural enemies. She even manages to host the

Aether inside her body, ensuring we get just enough shots of Portman writhing in space to keep the fanboys happy.

Combined with another standout comic performance from Kat Dennings as Portman's sidekick, Stellan Skarsgård as a genius scientist sans trousers and Idris Elba as the otherworldly guardian of Asgard in yellow contacts, and everything about this new Thor movie falls together quite nicely.

Yet, the jewel in the whole Thor franchise is Loki, the bruised and beaten god who just wants to get his turn on the throne. Thanks to Hiddleston's depth, we get all the oily darkness required for a successful turn as a powermonger with a thirst for payback.

In one creepy roll of his

baleful eyes, Loki erases all the Dudley Do-Right dullness of Thor and pushes him to the edge of his envelope.

For a superhero movie to tackle the concept of personal integrity is almost revolutionary because it's the one thing we don't question. We aren't taught to doubt Superman's goodness or Captain America's patriotic commitment, they are inherent to their identity.

Thor's director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) understood we need more than digital spectacle and 3D effects to keep us interested. A key reason behind my decision to head to the 2013 Hamptons International Film Festival this weekend was to get a sneak peak at Alexander Payne’s highly anticipated latest directorial debut, Nebraska. After garnering critical praise for his last two features–The Descendants and Sideways, respectively–Payne is back with a film that paints a detailed portrait of a group of lives that otherwise might seem mundane. The group of lives in question this time is the Grant family. After aging and slightly-senial Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) receives a notice from Publisher’s Clearing House telling him he is the lucky winner of one million dollars, his son David Grant (Will Forte) decides the only way to handle the situation, which Woody won’t let go of, is to drive his father from Montana to Lincoln, Nebraska–Publishers Clearing House’s headquarters–so that his father can see for himself that it is a scam. Pretty simple plot, right?

Well, true to Payne form, a simple, if not stock plot leads to a thorough depiction of a slice of reality. Payne achieves this both in The Descendants and Sideways, and it is not different in Nebraska. Simply put, the praise the film is garnering is deserved. Aside from Payne’s skilled direction, the acting is also something to take note of.

While it seems that everyone is talking about Will Forte’s turn from comedic to dramatic acting (and they definitely should, he did quite a good job), Bruce Dern is really the standout of the film. To say that Dern’s performance was nuanced and thoughtful would be an understatement. So thoroughly did Dern inhabit this character that when I saw him post film screening for a Q&A with Forte, I could not believe the person standing in front of me was coherent in a way that his character was not. Truly a fantastic performance.

As the Oscars near, the will-it-be’s keep coming our way. Given the Academy’s love for Payne and the movie’s truly good qualities, I think it will be an easy contender. While Nebraska certainly did have its problems– it was longer than it needed to be, parts of the film were uncharacteristically unrealistic, and the black and white seemed a little kitschy (but why focus on the not-so-good?)– the fact remains that it was a solid film out of this year’s crop so far. Man of Steel," which added a heavy dose of Krypton politics to Superman's once pleasantly silly story, comes "Thor: The Dark World," in which Thor's Asgard, a celestial home of gods floating somewhere in the universe, is the primary setting. Earth is an afterthought — just one of the "nine realms," albeit the one with Natalie Portman.

Gone are the earthbound pleasures of a superhero amid us mortals. Such was the joy of the "Spider-Man" movies and the first "Thor," when Chris Hemsworth's lofty, hammer-wielding Norse warrior, exiled to Earth, so happily encountered a cup of coffee for the first time.

As Marvel's latest 3-D behemoth, "Thor: The Dark World" isn't so much a sequel as the latest plug-and-play into the comic book company's blockbuster algorithm. It's a reliably bankable formula of world-saving action sequences, new villain introductions and clever quips from women on the side, (and they, most assuredly, are always off to the side).

The expansive Marvel universe is carefully stitched together across its many properties. "The Dark World" (with director Alan Taylor of "Game of Thrones" taking over for Kenneth Branaugh) follows "The Avengers" in chronology and runs alongside the current, unremarkable ABC series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Each is referred to with something less than, say, the binding connections of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. Instead we get cloying winks. The great city of New York, for example, is reduced to shorthand for the climactic battle in "The Avengers," as if we're still so consumed by that movie. Yes, we're all very impressed it made so much money.

Thor has spent the last two years restoring order to the nine realms of the cosmos, but just as peace settles, a previously locked-away dark energy called the Aether seeps out. It leaks into Portman's astrophysicist, Jane Foster, awakening a previously vanquished species of Dark Elves, led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston). They would like to see the universe returned to complete darkness. Not a day person, this Malekith.

This occurs as the nine realms are lining up in a rare convergence that makes them particularly susceptible to Aether-spread ruin. There's not a lick of character to Malekith and his motives: He just wants to end all life.

To save Life As We Know It, Thor seeks help from his duplicitous adoptive brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who has been imprisoned for killing thousands of humans at "New York." Hiddleston's sneering Loki remains one of the finest Marvel antagonists, and — now with a starring role in three films — the franchise seems to value him (as it should) as much as his more heroic brother.

When "The Dark World" touches down on Earth, away from the "Clash of the Titans"-style realms of gods, it's considerably better. Along with Portman, returning is the sarcasm sidekick Kat Dennings (as Jane's intern) and Stellan Skarsgard as discredited scientist Erik Selvig. Chris O'Dowd makes a welcome cameo as a blind date for a very reluctant Jane.

The tone is far more amiable on Earth (London, to be specific, the site of the final showdown) than in Asgard, where Anthony Hopkins, Renee Russo and Idris Elba remain locked in golden-hued majesty. Hemsworth, a seemingly perfectly rendered movie star equipped with brawn and baritone, also suffers from the stiffness. He had much more fun in "Rush" earlier this year.

Ardent fans (who should stay through the credits) will likely be satiated by the pleasing enough "Thor: The Dark World." But perhaps at this point, even diehards may wish for something more from a Marvel equation that often subtracts humanity.

"Thor: The Dark World," a Walt Disney release, is ratedPG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some suggestive content." "Thor: The Dark World" is the eighth movie in its particular franchise. So if anyone asks you what it has in common with "Blondie Goes Latin" and "Bomba and the Jungle Girl" you'll know the answer.

The franchise at hand goes by the name of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, encompassing the new adventures of Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America and so on, worth billions around the world. (Rumor has it the next all-star "Avengers" movie will be two hours of actors in costume, counting their money.) So how's this "Thor" sequel? It's fairly entertaining. Same old threats of galaxy annihilation, spiced with fish-out-of-water jokes. My favorite here: Encountering a London flat for the first time in his travels, Chris Hemsworth's Thor comes in the door and hangs his snazzy flying killer hammer from its leather loop on one of the coat hooks.

This is the second outing for mighty Thor and his mighty hammer, though honestly, what chance have they against Tom Hiddleston as Odin's other, less trustworthy son, Loki? The chief adversary from the first "Thor" (which I liked, in spite of its squareness) and the hugely popular mash-up "The Avengers" has a way of making valor and honor look foolish. Clearly director Alan Taylor, whose previous work has mostly been in classy series television (lately, "Game of Thrones" and "Boardwalk Empire"), likes this character best, because he snivels most.

Now for some very important plot points. In "Thor 2" Malekith, the leader of the dark elves of Svartalfheim, comes out of a long hibernation ready to rumble. Their secret weapon is the aether, pronounced "ee-ther," an "ancient force of infinite destruction," as Anthony Hopkins' Odin describes it, sounding like he's saying the words "blah blah blah" instead.

 

When some of the aether enters the bloodstream of astrophysicist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman once again), things get sticky. At the end of "Thor 1" Thor took off back to Asgard, leaving Jane bereft. "Thor 2" ponders the challenges of intergalactic dating, and the film has its scrambled moments where one beat of an action sequence begins on Earth, and then two seconds later, the second beat is completed at the other end of the tunnel. After a while anything's possible, and little is compelling, even though it's on Asgard where Jane meets Thor's folks. Other scenes takes place on Vanaheim, which is like Anaheim without Disneyland.

Taylor handles the battle sequences dutifully and without much visual dynamism. (If you go to "Thor 2," don't bother with the 3-D edition. Two's enough.) By now, in this Marvel world, we've seen everything twice, and it's hard to impress audiences with something new. But we don't go to "Thor 2" or any of these films, really, for something new. We go because we saw the other ones. The most satisfying films of the eight so far — the first "Iron Man" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" — did the job with a lighter hand and a less pummeling attack.

The occasional charms of "Thor 2" are all about the way Kat Dennings (back again as Jane's intern) deadpans her way through another Armageddon, or Hopkins' stunning final-t consonant enunciation when he bites off the end of the word "birthright." Or Hiddleston's malevolent grin, the mocking face of sibling rivalry. Plenty of fine actors do what they can here amid the digital mayhem and smashed columns. The new breathtaking film, “Ender’s Game,” starring Asa Butterfield as Ender Wiggin, begins with Ender living at home as the “third” child. Having a third child is no longer allowed unless you pay and get permission from the government. Meanwhile, aliens have attacked Earth, and people are doing everything they can to be ready to destroy them the next time they come close, even if it means preparing children to terminate them. Ender ends up as one of those children, thinking it could be a way to get away from his violent brother.

In this sci-fi fantasy, children like Ender are split into groups, training in zero gravity arenas against each other in a space camp. Ender, starting as the oddball loner of the group, works his way to the top, showing off not only his bravery but confidence in what he can do. He becomes not only the chief of his training group, but the leader of the best training group in battle school.

The main commanders of the battle school see the motivation and progress Ender has made throughout his stay and give him a psychological test. They determine his strengths and weaknesses so they can push him to be the best to eliminate the foreign creatures. Before the aliens attack, Ender learns more about these creatures, and his curiosity about them turns into sympathy. He wonders if they are even bad at all. He comes up with a plan for the moment the battle begins. But before they can even go into battle they must go through “graduation” practice, which simulates an actual battle with the aliens. When they finish, he and his team look up at the crowd of commanders waiting for gratitude on passing the graduation. Silence. Ender realizes what has happened. What have the commanders done? Ender storms out of the room crying. Could this affect Ender’s plan?

The dynamics of this film taking place in outer space and the action-adventure reels you in and pulls you to the edge of your seat. You may find yourself holding your breath a few times or curling your toes in your shoes. Bits and pieces of humor give the movie even more points. Butterfield does a good job developing his character throughout the movie.

Ender’s Game is a hero’s journey in the form of a sci-fi fantasy film. Adapted from Orson Scott Card’s 1985 book of the same name, the film transports you into a simulated video-gaming arena.

The film begins with a frame that quotes to the effect, “When I understand my enemy well enough, I start to love him.” And the denouement substantiates this.

What follows the first frame is a Star Wars like scenario with a cramped up voiceover informing the audience that, in the not too distant future, an alien race, known as the Formics, will attempt to colonize earth. Their attempt is foiled by a heroic pilot, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley) who sacrifices himself in the process.

Ever since, the earth’s leaders have been gearing up to repel any further attacks.

Fifty years later, with no intervening attack, the leaders put in place a scheme, whereby gifted children are monitored, selected and trained to take on any returning alien forces.

One such child is Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield). He is selected for his intelligence and killer instincts to solve problems, just the sort of quality military leader Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) is looking for.

Ender’s Game has lots of psychological intonations and messages that are free-flowing in the form of dialogues. The most pronounced one comes at the very end when Ender tries to analyze if he is actually a hero or a killer.

Graff announces, “We won, is all that matters,” to which Ender retorts, “The way we win matters.”

This does put an end to the debate, but not the film.

Asa Butterfield, earlier seen in Hugo, is the soul of the film. As Andrew Ender he is endearing and subtle. He earnestly portrays the conflicted child-genius with empathy, who longs to be with his sister Valentine, played by Abigail Breslin.

Abigail has a considerably tiny role and seems wasted in the film so does Hailee Steinfeld as Petra Arkanian, Ender’s Battle School Companion.

The other kids at the Battle School are mostly stereotypical. They too have very little to do to really shine, but they perform much better than expected.

Ford is engaging. But with all the youngsters around, he seems tired, weary and jaded by comparison. Viola Davis counter balances Ford with her humane approach. Ben Kingsley with a tattooed visage hams awfully.

The production quality is good.

Visually, the frames are attractive, the cosmic fireworks along with the space station with a zero gravity combat practice room for kids seems to be often seen in some previously released film.

The background score by Steve Jablonsky is effective, especially the drone buzz at the end when Ender goes to visit the Formic. It has a remarkable effect, on screen.

Compared to the novel, Writer Director Gavin Hood’s narration starts off on a tad tedious note, making it difficult to figure out the plot during the first act. The story settles in the second half and rushes forth with lots of action, emotional turmoil and thrill. The ending has a good, but not entirely satisfying twist to it.
